The QuickScan Report: What 5 Pages of Public Data Can Tell You in 48 Hours

A walkthrough of what a QuickScan intelligence report contains, using a fictional composite entity to illustrate each section.

The QuickScan is designed to answer one question: what does the public record say about this company and the people who run it? It does not attempt to be comprehensive. It attempts to be fast, accurate, and sufficient for initial screening decisions. Here is what it contains, illustrated with a fictional composite entity we will call Meridian Construction Services Pty Ltd.

Section 1: Entity status and registration

The first section establishes the basic legal facts about the entity. For Meridian Construction Services Pty Ltd, the findings might look like this:

  • ABN: 47 123 456 789 — Active. Registered 14 March 2018 (7 years, 3 months). GST registered since 1 April 2018.
  • ASIC company status: Registered. ACN 123 456 789. Company type: Proprietary Company Limited by Shares.
  • Registered address: Level 2, 45 Commercial Drive, Eight Mile Plains QLD 4113. Address matches ABR and ASIC records.
  • Directors: Michael Andrew Thornton (appointed 14 March 2018), Sarah Louise Meridian-Thornton (appointed 22 June 2019). No changes in past 24 months.
  • Entity age: 7 years. ABN age is a positive signal — entities that fail typically do so within 36 months of registration.

Green result across all entity checks. No discrepancies between ABR and ASIC records. No registered address anomalies.

Section 2: Director network map

This is where the QuickScan adds the most value that a simple ABN lookup cannot provide. For each director identified in Section 1, we search the ASIC register for all other companies they have directed — current and historical.

For Michael Andrew Thornton:

  • Meridian Construction Services Pty Ltd (current)
  • Meridian Holdings Pty Ltd (current) — the holding company that owns Meridian Construction's shares
  • Meridian Plant and Equipment Pty Ltd (current) — a related entity providing equipment hire
  • Consolidated Earthworks Pty Ltd (deregistered 2021, external administration) — this is the flag

Consolidated Earthworks Pty Ltd was deregistered in October 2021 following appointment of an administrator in July 2021. The creditors' report is publicly available from ASIC and shows A$1.8M in unsecured creditor claims, of which A$0 was recovered. The deregistration occurred 34 months before this QuickScan was run.

This does not disqualify Meridian Construction. It does mean the QuickScan returns an amber result on the director network check, with the specific finding documented and the source URL (ASIC company search) cited in the source register.

Section 3: Financial registry checks

The QuickScan checks four financial registers for the target entity and its ABN:

ATO Tax Transparency: Not found. Meridian Construction's total income is below the A$100M reporting threshold. This is expected for a company of this size and is not a concern in itself.

ATO R&D Tax Incentive: Not found. No R&D offset claims registered under this ABN. Also expected for a construction company — the R&D incentive is primarily used by technology, pharmaceutical, and mining companies.

WGEA Employer Register: Not found. Meridian Construction employs fewer than 100 staff. The WGEA reporting threshold is 100+ employees. No concern.

ACNC Charity Register: Not found. Not a charity or not-for-profit. No concern.

Result: No financial registry flags. The absence of results here is expected and not a negative finding for a company of this size and type.

Section 4: Adverse registry checks

This section checks the entity name and directors against seven adverse registers:

  • ASIC Banned and Disqualified Register — neither director found. Green.
  • ACCC Infringement Notices Register — entity name not found. Green.
  • DFAT Sanctions List — neither director found. Green.
  • ATO SGC Non-Compliance Register — ABN not found in the superannuation non-compliance list. Green.
  • ASIC Financial Services Enforcement — entity not found. Green.
  • Modern Slavery Register — not found. Note: the register only requires entities with A$100M+ consolidated revenue to lodge statements. Absence is expected, not a concern.
  • State Trade Licences (QBCC) — Meridian Construction Services appears on the QBCC licensee register with a current licence (Category: General Building, Financial Category: Category 3, Licence status: Current, Expiry: 30 June 2026). Green.

The director network finding (deregistered company connection) is the primary amber finding. No red flags across adverse checks. Overall QuickScan result: Amber — satisfactory with one director network finding that warrants follow-up.

Section 5: Source register

Every claim in a QuickScan is documented with its source URL, the date the check was run, and the data vintage (when the underlying database was last updated). For the Meridian Construction QuickScan, the source register would include:

  • Australian Business Register — verified 21 June 2026, data updated daily
  • ASIC Company Register — verified 21 June 2026, data updated weekly
  • ASIC Banned and Disqualified Register — data.gov.au daily CSV, loaded 20 June 2026
  • QBCC Licensee Register — verified 21 June 2026 via QBCC public search
  • ATO Tax Transparency — 2022-23 dataset, loaded February 2026
  • ASIC Company Extract for Consolidated Earthworks Pty Ltd — retrieved 21 June 2026

The source register means that every finding in the report is verifiable by the reader, independently of Gumshoe. If you want to confirm that Consolidated Earthworks entered external administration in 2021, the ASIC search link is in the report.

What a green, amber, and red result looks like

In our experience of running thousands of QuickScans:

  • Green result — approximately 68% of verifications. Entity is registered and active, directors have clean records, no adverse findings. Suitable for most commercial decisions without additional due diligence.
  • Amber result — approximately 27% of verifications. One or more findings that warrant follow-up but do not constitute disqualifying risk. The most common amber findings are director network connections to deregistered companies, ABN age under 18 months, address anomalies, or short-dated trade licences.
  • Red result — approximately 5% of verifications. A disqualifying finding: banned director, entity in external administration, active sanctions listing, ASIC fraud enforcement, or Phoenix pattern identification.

Who uses the QuickScan and for what decisions

The QuickScan is used across three primary contexts:

Pre-contract due diligence — before awarding a significant contract to a new supplier, particularly where the contract involves material upfront payments or creates long-term obligations. The QuickScan typically runs in 48-72 hours and costs A$499.

Investment screening — for private equity, family offices, and high-net-worth investors looking at private company acquisition targets or significant co-investment opportunities. The QuickScan provides the initial public record layer before more intensive due diligence is commissioned.

Loan and credit decisions — for non-bank lenders, invoice financiers, and businesses extending significant trade credit. The director network check in particular surfaces risks that a standard credit inquiry does not cover.

Uncommon Insights

One uncommon insight from a QuickScan report is that ASIC's deregistration of a director's previous company, even if it occurred years ago, can still impact the director network check result. For instance, Michael Andrew Thornton's involvement with Consolidated Earthworks Pty Ltd, which was deregistered in 2021 following external administration, would return an amber result on the director network check. This is because ASIC's records show the company's deregistration and the significant unsecured creditor claims, which, although not necessarily a reflection of Meridian Construction's financial health, indicate a need for closer examination.

A QuickScan report can also reveal potential discrepancies between ABR and ASIC records, which may indicate a need for further investigation. For example, if Meridian Construction's registered address on the ABR does not match the address on ASIC records, this could suggest an administrative error or, in some cases, a deliberate attempt to mislead. The QuickScan report would flag such discrepancies, allowing the user to take a closer look and verify the entity's details.

Under Section 588G of the Corporations Act, company directors have a duty to prevent insolvent trading. A QuickScan report can provide early warning signs of potential insolvency by analyzing the entity's age and director network. For instance, if Meridian Construction were to show a pattern of rapid entity creation and deregistration among its directors, this could indicate a higher risk of insolvency. The QuickScan report would highlight such patterns, enabling users to assess the entity's creditworthiness more accurately.

The ATO's Tax Transparency Report, which is checked as part of the QuickScan report, can provide valuable insights into an entity's financial health. Although Meridian Construction's total income is below the A$100M reporting threshold, the QuickScan report would still note this as part of the financial registry checks. In cases where an entity's income is above the threshold, the Tax Transparency Report can reveal information about the entity's tax debt and payment history, which can be a critical factor in assessing its creditworthiness.
