Disputes & Corrections

If a Gumshoe verification result appears incorrect, this page explains what our flags mean, how to request a review, and what to expect.

What our verdicts mean

Gumshoe does not form opinions about businesses. Every check result is sourced directly from a named public register. A FAIL or WARN result means the relevant register returned a match — it does not mean Gumshoe has concluded the business is fraudulent or untrustworthy.

Common examples:

  • Insolvency FAIL — the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA) register shows an open insolvency proceeding linked to this ABN or a director.
  • FWO WARN — the Fair Work Ombudsman's enforcement register shows a historical compliance matter linked to this entity.
  • ABN status WARN — the Australian Business Register shows the ABN is cancelled, suspended, or the entity status is non-standard.
  • Web WARN — the domain listed on the ABR does not resolve, is recently registered, or has WHOIS anomalies.

If the underlying register is wrong, the correction must be made at the register — Gumshoe cannot override government data. We can note a dispute against a result while a register correction is being processed.

How to request a review

Email disputes@gumshoe.au with:

  1. The ABN or entity name that was verified.
  2. The check(s) you believe returned an incorrect result.
  3. The evidence you have that the result is wrong (e.g. AFSA discharge certificate, ATO confirmation of ABN reinstatement, court order).
  4. If the error is in an underlying register, a reference number for your correction request with that register.

We will acknowledge your request within 2 business days. We aim to complete reviews within 10 business days. Complex cases involving active register corrections may take longer.

What happens next

  • If the result is sourced from a register that has since been updated, we will re-run the relevant check and update the verification result.
  • If the result correctly reflects the current register data but the register data is wrong, we can add a dispute note visible to any Gumshoe user who runs that ABN, pending the register correction.
  • If we identify an error in Gumshoe's interpretation or processing of register data, we will correct it and re-run affected verifications.
